How the Technology Works
How does SoundBreak generate songs?
SoundBreak uses advanced AI technology to generate complete songs based on your prompts. You provide a text description of what you want, including vocal characteristics (like "American male vocals" or "smooth soulful female vocals"), genre, style, and instrument details (like "layered electric guitars with reverb" or "piano and strings"). Our AI creates both the music and lyrics based on your description. You can also provide your own lyrics if you prefer. The AI analyzes your prompt and generates a full song that matches your vision.
What information can I provide to generate a song?
You can start with a basic prompt about your song idea—just describe what you want the song to be about, the story, mood, or theme. When you're working with an AI Cowriter, by default the song will be created using that AI Cowriter's style (their genre, vocal characteristics, and instrument preferences).
However, you can override the AI Cowriter's default style by specifying your own detailed musical elements in your prompt, or by uploading your own song to use as a style reference. If you want to customize the style, you can:
- Upload a Song for Style: Upload your own MP3 or M4A file to use as a style reference. The AI will analyze the musical characteristics of your uploaded song and use it to guide the style of the new song you're creating.
- Describe Vocals: Describe the vocal characteristics, such as "American male vocals," "smooth soulful female vocals," "powerful rock vocals with falsetto," etc.
- Specify Genre: Specify the genre like "Rock," "Pop," "Country," "Hip Hop," "R&B," "Jazz," "Electronic," etc.
- Describe Instruments & Style: Describe the instruments and their style, such as "layered electric guitars with ambient reverb," "piano and strings," "big powerful drums," "atmospheric synths," "groovy bass lines," etc.
- Add Mood & Feel: Add any mood, era, or stylistic elements you want (e.g., "90s vibe," "upbeat and energetic," "mellow and introspective")
- Provide Lyrics: Optionally provide your own lyrics, or let the AI generate them
How long does it take to generate a song?
Song generation typically takes a few minutes. The exact time can vary based on the complexity of your request and current system load. You'll receive a notification once your song is ready.
Can I collaborate with specific artists on SoundBreak?
Yes! SoundBreak features AI Cowriters—collaborative partners that help guide the style of your songs. Each AI Cowriter has their own unique default style, genre preferences, and writing characteristics that influence the songs you create together. When you write with an AI Cowriter, they receive proper credit and compensation for their contribution to your songs.
What's the difference between AI Cowriters and the artists whose music was used for training?
These are two separate things:
- AI Cowriters: These are collaborative partners you choose to work with. They provide style guidance and have default musical characteristics, but you can override their style with your own specifications in your prompt. AI Cowriters are real artists who have opted in to be featured on the platform and receive compensation when you create songs with them.
- Training data: The AI systems we use to generate music are trained by our technology partners on materials those partners are authorized to use under their own terms, partner agreements, and applicable law. That can include licensed catalogs. Where a partner licenses training music from artists and catalog owners, those rightsholders are paid under that partner's agreements. They are separate from AI Cowriters and do not appear as collaborators on individual songs unless they have also become AI Cowriters.
Can I revise or regenerate a song if I don't like the result?
Yes, you can continue the conversation with your AI Cowriter to refine and revise your song. You can request changes to the style, lyrics, tempo, or any other elements until you're happy with the result.
Ethical AI Training & Data Usage
How is SoundBreak's AI trained? Is it ethical?
SoundBreak is committed to ethical AI practices. We generate music using technology partners whose models are trained on materials those partners are authorized to use under their own terms, partner agreements, and applicable law. That can include licensed catalogs. Where a partner licenses training music from artists and catalog owners, those rightsholders are compensated under that partner's agreements, not by SoundBreak. That training is separate from AI Cowriters, who are real artists who opt in to collaborate on the platform and are credited and paid when you create with them.
How do you ensure artists are fairly compensated?
Artist compensation on SoundBreak works in two layers:
- AI Cowriters: Artists who become AI Cowriters receive 25% of subscription revenue (split based on usage) and 25% of publishing royalties when their fans distribute songs. They receive regular monthly payouts through Stripe.
- Training rightsholders: When a generation partner licenses music for training from artists and catalog owners, those rightsholders are paid under that partner's agreements. That is separate from AI Cowriter compensation.
AI Cowriter payouts are handled by SoundBreak. Training-data compensation, if any, is handled by the generation partner that licensed that music.
Artist Partnerships & Compensation
How does SoundBreak support and compensate artists?
SoundBreak is built on a foundation of fair artist compensation and partnership:
- Revenue Sharing: AI Cowriters receive 25% of subscription revenue, distributed monthly based on usage, plus 25% of publishing royalties when their fans distribute songs
- Promotion Support: We help artists promote their AI Cowriter to their fanbase
- Trending Songs: Artists receive weekly reports of trending songs created with their AI, which they can promote on social media
- Creative Opportunities: Artists are encouraged to re-record fan favorites and collaborate with fans on official releases
What are the requirements to become an AI Cowriter?
To become an AI Cowriter, you need:
- A genuine reputation as a songwriter/composer OR be an influential individual with a desire to create a fun songwriting experience with fans
- Willingness to periodically promote your AI Cowriter to your fans and interact with top fan-created songs
- A valid bank account connected to Stripe to receive payouts
If you're interested, you can apply to become an AI Cowriter.
Do artists have control over their AI Cowriter?
Yes! Artists have full control over their AI Cowriter, including:
- Setting their AI's name, description, and genre
- Defining their default music style and writing characteristics
- Choosing their studio background image
- Setting opening messages and personality
- Controlling whether explicit content is allowed
Artists can customize their AI to match their authentic style or create a unique creative persona.
How do artists get paid?
Artists receive payouts through Stripe Connect, which requires connecting a bank account. Payouts happen monthly for subscription revenue shares, and royalties are paid out as they're collected from streaming platforms (typically 3-5 months after distribution). All payments are processed securely through Stripe.
SoundBreak Radio
What is SoundBreak Radio?
SoundBreak Radio is our platform's music discovery feature where you can listen to songs created by the SoundBreak community. Once you submit a song to Radio, it becomes available for others to discover and listen to. Radio is a fun way to share your music and see what the community is creating. Songs are ranked by popularity based on likes, listens, and community engagement.
How do I submit my song to SoundBreak Radio?
After creating a song, you can submit it to SoundBreak Radio using the "Send to Radio" button on your track. You can choose to submit either the original AI-generated version or a reproduced version if you've uploaded your own finished version. Once submitted, your song will be available for the community to discover and listen to.
How are songs ranked on SoundBreak Radio?
Songs are ranked by popularity based on community engagement, likes, and listens. Popularity is tracked over different time periods (daily, weekly, monthly) so you can see what's trending now versus what's been popular overall.
What happens to popular songs on SoundBreak Radio?
The most popular songs on SoundBreak Radio get sent to the AI Cowriter's team. This gives artists the opportunity to discover fan favorites, promote these songs on their social media, interact with their fans' creations, and potentially re-record tracks they really like for official releases.
Do AI Cowriters review songs on SoundBreak Radio?
Yes! AI Cowriters receive weekly reports of trending songs created with their AI that are performing well on SoundBreak Radio. The most popular songs are sent directly to the artist's team, helping them discover fan favorites and giving them opportunities to promote these songs, interact with their fans' creations, and potentially collaborate on official releases.
Distribution & Royalties
How do royalty splits work when I distribute a song?
When you distribute a song to streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.), the publishing royalties are split as follows:
- You (the creator): 50%
- AI Cowriter (the artist): 25%
- SoundBreak: 25%
These percentages are automatically registered with distribution platforms in the song's metadata. You cannot remove or alter this attribution when distributing through third-party distributors.
What's the difference between royalty-free and distribution licenses?
SoundBreak offers two types of licenses:
- Royalty-Free License: Allows you to use the track on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook without collecting royalties. These tracks are not released to Spotify, Apple Music, or other streaming platforms. Songs marked eligible on My Tracks move to a distribution license when you upgrade to Pro Mode. Other royalty-free songs stay royalty-free. New songs you create on Pro Mode are licensed for distribution.
- Distribution License: Allows you to distribute the track to all major streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) and collect royalties. Royalties are split according to the 50/25/25 split mentioned above.
How long does it take to receive royalties after distribution?
Royalties from streaming platforms typically take 3-5 months to process and appear in your account. This delay is standard across the music industry, as platforms need time to process streams, calculate royalties, and distribute payments. You can track your earnings through our royalties dashboard.
What platforms can I distribute to?
With a Distribution License, you can distribute to major streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, and many others. Royalty-free tracks can be distributed to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. SoundBreak handles the distribution process for you through our distribution partners.
Can I distribute SoundBreak tracks through another distributor?
Right now, distribution goes through our distribution partner, Revelator, as part of SoundBreak. Unfortunately, we don't support releasing the same SoundBreak tracks through a separate distributor yet. We may open that up down the road. The challenging part isn't the upload itself; it's keeping royalty splits accurate for every creator and AI Cowriter when income and reporting could be spread across multiple distributors and platforms. We're focused on getting that right in one pipeline first so everyone gets paid fairly and on time.
Distribution is included in your SoundBreak subscription, so you don't need to pay a separate fee for a distribution service.
Are there any fees for distribution?
Our distribution partner takes a 7-15% distribution fee depending on the platform. This fee is deducted from the royalties before they're split between you, the AI Cowriter, and SoundBreak. There are no upfront fees for distribution—you only pay when your music earns royalties.
Can I change the songwriter/composer credits after distribution?
No. Once a track is submitted for distribution, the songwriter/composer credits (including the 50/25/25 split) are locked and registered with the distribution platforms. This ensures proper attribution and royalty distribution. Make sure your songwriter/composer name is correct in your account settings before submitting for distribution.
Do I own the master recording rights?
As between you and SoundBreak, you each own 50% of the composition and recording rights, and you receive 50% of net revenue from exploitation. When a track is distributed, SoundBreak's 50% is registered as 25% to the AI Cowriter and 25% to SoundBreak — that is the 50/25/25 publishing split above. SoundBreak has the exclusive right to distribute and exploit the content.
General Questions
What subscription plans does SoundBreak offer?
SoundBreak offers two main plans:
- Casual Creator Plan: Includes creating up to 50 royalty-free tracks per month, with the ability to distribute up to 25 tracks to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook
- Pro Plan: Includes creating up to 100 distribution-licensed tracks per month, with full distribution capabilities to all major streaming platforms
Both plans include additional usage-based pricing for tracks beyond the monthly limits. Visit our billing page for current pricing details.
Can I export stems from my generated songs?
Yes! You can export stems (individual tracks for vocals, drums, bass, etc.) from your songs. This allows you to further edit, remix, or reproduce your tracks in your own DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). Stems are available for download from your song's page.
Can I upload my own finished version of a song?
Yes! After generating a song, you can export the stems, work on them in your own studio, and upload your finished version back to SoundBreak. This is especially useful if you want to add your own production touches or re-record certain elements. Your uploaded version can then be used for distribution.
What happens to my songs if I cancel my subscription?
If you cancel your subscription, you must take down any tracks you've distributed to streaming platforms before the cancellation takes effect. Tracks that were exported with a distribution license while your plan was active remain licensed to you permanently. However, you'll lose access to create new songs and distribute new tracks without an active subscription.
How do I report copyright issues or policy violations?
If you encounter copyright issues or policy violations, please contact us at support@soundbreak.ai. We take intellectual property rights seriously and will investigate all reports promptly.
Can I use SoundBreak songs commercially?
Yes, with the appropriate license. Royalty-free tracks can be used commercially on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Distribution-licensed tracks can be distributed to streaming platforms and earn royalties. However, you cannot sell your share of the content to standalone sound libraries or sample packs. For specific commercial use cases, please contact support.
